Keep a diary
WHAT DID YOU EAT YESTERDAY? I MEAN EVERYTHING. CAN YOU REMEMBER? I’M GUESSING YOU’LL PROBABLY REMEMBER MOST THINGS BUT YOU WILL PROBABLY SKIP A FEW DETAILS. SO WRITE IT DOWN. THERE ARE TWO REASONS WHY A FOOD DIARY CAN BE USEFUL: FIRST, IF YOU’RE CONFIDENT THAT YOUR DIET IS THE VERY BEST IT CAN BE, A SNAPSHOT OF YOUR PERFECT DAY CAN PROVE A GOOD TEMPLATE IN CASE YOU RUN INTO TROUBLE IN THE FUTURE; SECOND, IT’S A GREAT WAKE-UP CALL IF PERHAPS YOU’RE NOT DOING AS WELL AS YOU COULD.
SEEING EVERY MORSEL THAT HAS PASSED YOUR LIPS WRITTEN DOWN IN BLACK AND WHITE REINFORCES ALL THE GOOD CHOICES AND HIGHLIGHTS THE NOT-SO-GOOD ONES. REMEMBER TOO, THIS IS NOT A CALORIE-COUNTING GAME, IT’S A QUALITY-MEASURING GAME.
A quick recap
No more pressure
Try not to think of this as a diet and you will automatically reduce the pressure. You are simply creating some healthy eating habits that will contribute to a change in your shape and make you a healthier person inside and out.
Pee clearly
Everything you eat contains some water, or it would be indigestible. A fish, for instance, is between 70 per cent and 80 per cent water. It all counts.
Keep calm and carry on
Remember that stone I talked about earlier in the book? The one my daughter gave me that she found on the beach? Using something like that will really help you to keep calm and carry on. It will remind you of all that is good in your life and why you’re doing this in the first place. Why do I exercise and eat good food? Because I want to be able to walk my daughter down the aisle, dance with her on her wedding day and play with her children. Not because I want to look good in jeans and a T-shirt. It doesn’t have to be a stone, it could be anything small that reminds you of all the things that are truly important in your life and you are the most grateful for.
Get some sleep
How are you feeling? Alive and full of energy or foggy and longing for the day to be over?
